For many years, songs have been a great way of reminding people of someone who has passed away.
They may have had the song played at their funeral, been the last song that you listened to with that person, a song that was created in memory of that person.

In this thread, you can share with us the songs that mean the most to you when it comes to remembering someone that has passed away and the stories behind these songs

The song that still brings chills down my body when I hear it has to be Candle In The Wind by Elton John. Obviously this song was originally written about Marilyn Monroe but just hearing this reminds me of the version Goodbye England's Rose that was written and played by Elton at the funeral of Princess Diana. Will never forget the day of her funeral 6 September 1997, when the whole country stopped what they were doing and watched the very emotional journey of the hearse as it travelled to Westminster Abbey and then the moment when Elton John sang his tribute song to the great lady at her funeral service. What a wonderful tribute to a wonderful lady, RIP Diana

I could be wrong but I think it was Puff Daddy who was number 1 when Dianna died, with I'll be Missing You and that song always brings a lump to my throat. Listen to the words and i think a lot of people will relate to it on this forum

This may sound a little odd but I lost one of my best friends to cancer a couple of years ago and i'll never forget two songs that were played at her funeral. She chose them - one was 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' and it left the congregation smiling and remembering her for the fun loving individual that she was, as well as a few tears. The other song, I can't ever hear it now without having a tear in my eye. it was Somewhere over the Rainbow but it wasn't the Judy Garland version. I'm not sure who did it but it was more modern. There's a line in that song that gets me right in the heart - "And the dreams that you dare to, who, oh why, can't I." I feel so emotional that she didn't get to live out her dreams as her life was just caught so short so I fully intend to as we never know what's waiting round the corner.

Back in 1991, my younger sister Kayleigh was just 15 when she died tragically following a car accident. At the time she was a huge fan of MC Hammer and with me being 17 at the time we were always arguing about our music tastes and she would always fight her corner and tell me how great MC Hammer was. At her funeral we played one of her favourite MC Hammer songs, 'Have You Seen Her'. It is not the sort of song that you hear being played on the radio very often nowadays but every now and then it comes on and always reminds me of Kayleigh. Strangely enough, 3 years ago I was driving to work and this song came on the radio, amazingly it was on the anniversary of her death and it was almost as if it was a message from her to me. I looked up to heaven with a smile and said to her "Yes Kayleigh, I will never forget you".

On the 22nd May 2017, I lost a very close friend in the Manchester Arena bombing. I won't reveal her name because that wouldn't be fare but we had been friends since school and although as our lives had taken different paths and we lived some way apart from each other, we were planning to meet up just 3 days after this concert having not seen each other for 6 months. She was such a kind and wonderful person, who always thought of others and her death came as a huge shock to me and even now I get so emotional when I think about what happened. For me every time I hear 'One Last Time' by Ariana Grande, it brings a tear to my eyes as I think of her but it also keeps her memory alive and makes me think about how I should appreciate life more as you really never know what is around the corner in life. I just wish that I could have seen her that 'one last time' again and the performance of this song from Ariana Grande at the One Love Manchester concert, was one of the most bravest things I have seen and also such an emotional performance that I know my friend would have simply loved to have seen. RIP my dear friend.

Me best mate lost his Dad in the Hillsborough disaster and at his funeral i'm told that they played You'll Never Walk Alone. Sadly, me mate passed 6 months ago so I just had to have the iconic song played for him just in the same way as his Dad. I'm sure many others have done this and many others will in the future but i had to mention it - it brings back so many memories every time i hear it

What a lovely idea and it is amazing how many different songs bring back memories of lost loved ones. My best friend Paul and I are big country music fans and in particular fans of Kenny Chesney.
Back in 2007, Paul's younger brother Mark was killed in a motorbike accident at the age of 20. For both Paul and I, the song that we have adopted as a tribute to Mark is 'Who You'd Be Today' by Kenny Chesney. On the anniversary of his death, every year we get together and raise a glass to Mark and end up singing this song to keep his memory alive. If you get a chance to listen to the song then please do and you will see why some of the words in it, mean so much to us. RIP Mark

My Husband and I were also huge fans of Country Music with Cole Swindell being one of our favourite artists. Sadly my Husband died in March 2017 from lung cancer at the age of 49. For me, the song that brings a tear to my eye but also keeps his memory alive is 'You Should Be Here' by Cole Swindell. We always loved this song anyway and the sentiment behind it ,but since his passing it has a new personal meaning to me and the words are just so much more special. RIP Johnny, the best Husband that I could ever have wished for xxx

Some beautiful song choices and the stories to go with them being posted here and I particularly love the Country music ones as I am a big fan of this music. One song and the story behind it that I love is Sissy's Song by Alan Jackson. He wrote it following the sudden death of someone close to him and the song was also played at her funeral. If you have not heard this then please have a listen and read the story behind it, a lovely song and a lovely tribute to her

Have to have my say here, best song for us is " Both sides now" by Joni Mitchell. she wrote this at an early age, such a great song for a young artist. Very talented lady both in music and painting. It will forever be our anthem, god bless her, Howard & Livi, Basingstoke. UK.
