For many years, songs have been a great way of reminding people of someone who has passed away.
They may have had the song played at their funeral, been the last song that you listened to with that person, a song that was created in memory of that person.

In this thread, you can share with us the songs that mean the most to you when it comes to remembering someone that has passed away and the stories behind these songs

Sign of the times by Harry Styles is a very important song for my family. It happened to be released the day my close cousin passed away. The lyrics hit so close to home that it felt like it was meant for him. He passed from a drug overdose so where it says, “you can’t bribe your door on the way to the sky” made it seem too real. We miss my cousin dearly and this songs makes us feel closer to him.

Reading through all the songs and their emotional stories posted here and by the end of it my eyes are welling up but made me feel that I should share a song that will always be a big reminder of my friend 'Big' Dave who passed away in 2001. He was real gentle giant and served in the London Fire Brigade for 15 years before he left to look after and care for his elderly Mum. His Mum passed away in 1999 and sadly Dave left this world only 2 years later with his death coming as a real shock to everyone who knew him. At his funeral his family arranged for Hero by Mariah Carey to be played to the congregation and this seemed such an appropriate song for someone who had been a real hero to many people over the years.
Even now whenever I hear this song, I take a moment to look above me and think of 'Big' Dave

Slipped Away by Avril Lavigne is the song that will always remind me of my ex boyfriend Karl who passed away on July 20th 2004, which was shortly after I had already heard this song on Avril's album Under My Skin
I never actually got to say goodbye to Karl as he was on a weekend away with friends when he was involved in a car accident and therefore the words to this song are very poignant to me. As silly as it may sound, even now on the anniversary of his death I still take time to listen to this song as a reminder of him.
" The day you slipped away, was the day that I found it won't be the same" Still Missing You Karl xxx

Rule The World from Take That - My best friend J tragically lost his wife M to cancer in 2009 and I will never forget how emotional her funeral service was when this particular song was played. J spoke to the congregation and explained that he had chosen this song to be played as M had always loved Take That and because of the words...he then broke down in tears before he could finish speaking but then the song came on and everyone listened to the words "Don't close your eyes, don't fade away, don't fade away" and we all knew what he sadly meant.

Whenever I hear Love Me Tender by Elvis Presley I immediately think of my Nan who passed away in 1996. I was only 12 at the time and because my Nan and Grandad both loved Elvis, my Grandad chose this to be played at her funeral service. Being so young at the time I never realised the significance of the words to the song but remember seeing so many people in the congregation in tears when this song was played. Now I am older I can completely understand why he chose this great song and when my Grandad passed away in 2008, I pictured them both reunited in heaven listening and slow dancing to this song together.
The song had an extra lasting legacy on me because ever since her death, I have loved listening to Elvis which I like to think they would be very pleased about

This topic is a real emotional roller coaster and having read all the contributions posted, I thought it only right to share my own.
My Husband was working abroad when he tragically passed away on December 4th 2013 and I will never forget that moment when I received the phone call telling me the awful news.
At the time I was at home and had the radio on and after I ended the call I just sat there in complete silence other than the noise from the radio.
Within a minute or so a song came on the radio and it was Say Something by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera. I already knew the song but suddenly as I listened to the words, it took on a whole new meaning to me and the tears rolled down my eyes as I listened to the words and thought of my Husband.

My close friend Lisa and I had always been great fans of Green Day and saw them together live at Brixton Academy in 1995. Sadly in January 1998, Lisa took her own life after battling with mental health issues which came as a huge loss to me as we had been close friends since we were 9 years old. One of her favourite songs was "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" by Green Day and after a discussion amongst our friends, we chose to play this as a tribute to Lisa at her funeral. Over 20 years later when I listen to this song it still reminds me of Lisa and the 'time of our life' that we shared together.
